Photographer Ryan Janek Wolowski captured the serenity and introspective elements of Washington D.C.'s National Cherry Blossom Festival through film. The cherry blossom trees were originally given to Washington D.C. from Japan and planted along the Tidal Basin area in 1912, when blooming for such a short period of time the beautiful Yoshino cherry blossoms remind us that the same can be said for the beauty of life itself, as the journey as humans is quick and can be quite extraordinary.

Each year during the New Year’s Eve celebration in Times Square in Manhattan New York City a time ball made by Waterford Crystal and electric lights is raised to the top of a pole on the One Times Square building at 6:00 pm and then lowered to mark the coming of the New Year. The ball descends 77 feet (23 m) over the course of a minute coming to rest at the bottom of its pole at midnight, then a sign with the digits of the new year lights up as the ball's lights turn off. Toshiba's Times Square billboard directly below the ball counts down to midnight as well.

Video TIMES SQUARE NEW YEARS EVE BALL DROP 2011

Every year up to one million people gather in Times Square to watch the ball drop and an estimated 1 billion watch the video of the event, 100 million of them in the United States.

In 1904 The New York Times opens its new headquarters on Longacre Square (the city's second tallest building) and persuades the city to rename the triangular "square" for the newspaper. Owner Adolph Ochs initiates a massive celebration in the square for New Year's, which is so popular 200,000 came it permanently displaces the celebration from Trinity Church. There is no ball, but there are fireworks.

1907 Walter F. Palmer chief electrician for The Times creates the first New Year’s Eve Ball in response to the behest of publisher Adolph Ochs to create some kind of spectacular midnight show that would draw attention to the Square. The New Year’s Eve Ball first descended from a flagpole at One Times Square constructed with iron and wood materials with 100 25-watt bulbs weighing 700 pounds (320 kg) and measuring 5 feet (1.5 m) in diameter. At first it dropped 1 second after midnight.

In 2011 the tradition continues here is a look at Times Square New York City on December 31st 2010 New Years Eve for the big 2011 ball drop celebration.

The event was held in front of the U.S. Capitol Building on the east end of the National Mall in Washington D.C. and drew approximately 215,000 thousand people. The Rally application for a permit to the National Park Service listed they hoped for an attendance at the combined event of about 25,000 people. News reports claim this rally was a satirical response to Glenn Beck's Restoring Honor rally and Al Sharpton's Reclaim the Dream rally.

Jon Stewart announced the "Rally to Restore Sanity" on the September 16, 2010 of The Daily Show, Stephen Colbert announced the "March to Keep Fear Alive" on the The Colbert Report the same day.

Oprah Winfrey appeared on The Daily Show and gave the attending audience all free airline tickets to the rally. Stephen Colbert gave his audience gusts free Chinatown bus tickets to the rally.

Times Square New York City Gets a facelift

Times Square New York City get a facelift as Aéropostale opens Flagship retail store in the 1515 Broadway building. People lined up down Broadway for the grand opening on Friday October 22nd 2010, shoppers and gawkers walked the red carpet into the American clothing retailers newest location by the dozens.

The $5 limited edition promotional shirts with a NYC subway theme were the hot sellers which were worn by the entire staff on the day of the grand opening.

Loud hip-hop and dance music filled the retail store like a nightclub and in a very creepy image the store looked more like an Amsterdam brothel as young girls wearing Aéropostale badges danced in the window of the second floor... which was meant to be a viewing opportunity that lures shoppers up to the second floor in order to have exclusive views of the very touristy Times Square out the retail stores window.

Robert John Burck (born December 23, 1970 in Cincinnati, Ohio), better known as the Naked Cowboy, is an American busker whose patch is on New York City's Times Square. He wears only cowboy boots, a hat, and briefs, with a guitar strategically placed to give the illusion of nudity. In these photos you can also see The Naked Cowboy aside from supporting breast cancer awareness has cut off his long blonde romance novel cover locks, Burck changed his looks to a more conservative image in order to run for the 2012 presidential election. On October 6, 2010 Burck officially declared his presidential candidacy at a press conference in Times Square he stated that he was neither a Democrat or a Republican, but rather "an American" and that he intends to lead the U.S. Tea Party movement into the Oval Office.

New Yorkers Rally in Times Square as violence against the LGBT community and teen suicides are on the rise

On Friday October 15th 2010 at 6pm the red stairs in Times Square New York City above the TKTS sales window became a platform for hope. The group Queer Rising invited people to arrive the popular tourist location and encouraged them to bring signs as well a printed image of an LGBT victim of hate violence or bullycide. Queer Rising reminded those invited we are NOT threatening, we are NOT scary, we are NOT shameful, HATE speech is a DIRECT CAUSE of suicide / violence within our community. New York City is the birthplace of the current LGBT ( Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender ) movement, which went into full swing in June of 1969 at the Stonewall Riots on Christopher Street in Greenwich Village. Ten days prior to the demonstration in Times Square Benjamin Carver 39 years old from Washington D.C. was brutally beaten by Matthew Francis, 21, and 17-year-old Christopher Orlando in a gay bashing that took place inside the bathroom of the Stonewall Bar. The violence in the month of October was not limited to the attack at the Stonewall Bar on Sunday October 3rd thru the 4th 2010 in the Bronx section of NY 11 people were charged in the violent gang beating and torture of two teens and a man 30 years old, The the victims were burned, beaten, tortured and sodomized with a baseball bat. The hate continues on October 1st 2010 in Chelsea, on the corner of 25th Street and Ninth Avenue, as three men were hugging and kissing goodbye on the corner, five or six men yelled slurs and attacked them with fists and a metal garbage can. The anniversary date of the National Equality March in Washington D.C. of October 11th was also a day for more anti-gay violence in NYC this time at Julius Bar Frederick Giunta, 25, was arrested and charged with assaulting two men in a row in New York City's West Village. After robbing and hitting one, Giunta allegedly beat up a bartender at Julius, saying to him, "What are you going to do, you f**king ni***r. You are a f**king fa**ot.". The rising anti-gay violence was not the only reason New Yorkers gathered in Times Square, fall of 2010 saw an alarming increase of teen suicide due to anti-gay bullying become an epidemic in the USA a country that has yet to repeal it's "Don't Ask Don't Tell" policy or provide full marriage equality for all of it's citizens.

The Rally was Organized by Queer Rising who are a grassroots organization created to demand queer rights through direct action. Formed in late 2009 as a response to the New York State Legislature’s denial of same-sex marriage to its constituents, Queer Rising has organized several actions demanding equality and justice for all. Actions include a Valentines Day protest in which members chained themselves to the New York Marriage Bureau. Tired of watching our rights be put on the back burning or given no attention at all, Queer Rising has vowed to continue to pressure legislators and the public until all queer people are equal.

Rain cannot stop The Metropolitan Opera.

The everyday sounds of Times Square New York City taxi cab car horns, city tour bus announcements and Broadway show ticket sales voices were replaced with the sounds of opera music for one night only.

Opening Night of The Metropolitan Opera was transmitted live to multiple giant screens in Times Square. Approximately 2,000 seats were available on a first come, first served basis, with additional standing room provided. Pre-show coverage, including red-carpet interviews and special features.

The Metropolitan Opera aka The Met’s 2010–11 season kicked off on September 27, 2010 with the gala premiere of Robert Lepage's new production of Wagner’s "Das Rheingold". James Levine celebrating his 40th anniversary with the Met, conducted, and Bryn Terfel stared as Wotan.

This joyous celebration was met with heavy rain storms that could not put a damper on the sprits of culture vultures in the big apple looking to score themselves a free seat, under an umbrella /wearing a plastic rain poncho.

9/11 Memorial Tribute in Light will continue to shine

The Tribute in Light is an art installation of 88 searchlights placed next to the site of the World Trade Center to create two vertical columns of light in remembrance of the September 11 attacks. It initially ran as a temporary installation from March 11 to April 14, 2002, and was launched again in 2003 to mark the second anniversary of the attack. As of 2010, it has been repeated every year on September 11. It had been announced that 2008 would be its final year, The tribute was continued in 2009 then on December 17, 2009, it was confirmed that the tribute would continue through to the tenth anniversary of the attacks in 2011.

The 65th Anniversary of the most famous kiss which took place on August 14th 1945 the day the war ended and peace began.

On the anniversary of the end of World War II, the Times Square Alliance invites couples from all generations and of all types to celebrate again in Times Square, in honor of the US Armed Forces and in celebration of the universal ideals of peace, love and hope.

A special invitation is extended to couples whose kisses bridge boundaries, be they religious, political, racial, national or otherwise, as well as veterans of WWII, returning veterans from the Iraq War, and couples in costumes commemorating the original 1945 kiss.

All couples are welcome to attend the event and participate on Broadway between 43rd and 44th streets.

Stabbing in Times Square New York City

Times Square NYC Stabbing 08/12/2010 A street performer slathered in silver paint stabbed a tour-bus ticker seller Thursday night in Times Square.

Gerald Brown, 50 plunged a screwdriver into the forearm of the 44 year-old victim at about 7:30pm on 44th Street near Seventh Avenue, cops and witnesses said.

The victim was taken to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition.

The stabber Gerald Brown was nabbed running into a subway station, and the bloody screwdriver was recovered, police said.

Fire in Times Square New York City

FDNY Firefighters at the previous MTV Store ground floor retail location at 1515 Broadway Times Square New York City Wednesday night August 11th 2010 . The fire was at approximately 12am no one was injured or evacuated, The Lion King had already let out of the Minskoff Theater and there were no evening shows that night at the Nokia Theater, the lobby of 1515 Broadway building was filled with the smell of smoke but the fire never went past the ground floor location due to the speedy service of the FDNY.

Happy Birthday FDNY Dad

Today July 13th 2010 would have been my father John Thomas Ryan's 77th Birthday. My Father worked as a NYC Firefighter and was working at a fire on 14th St. when the phone company location went a blaze. Firefighters at that time were not required to wear masks on calls if there was no smoke present. The phone company fire on 14th st was mostly plastics burning a clear gas in the air.. my father along with many other firefighters were ill with cancer and other diseases not long after the fire. Cancer is what took my fathers life. FDNY has addressed this and there have been changes in required gear. In this post is a photo of my father at work that was used for the cover of the book "New York City Firefighting, 1901-2001" by Steven Scher. Happy Birthday Dad know that you are loved and never forgotten.

Presidential Proclamation--Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month

As Americans, it is our birthright that all people are created equal and deserve the same rights, privileges, and opportunities. Since our earliest days of independence, our Nation has striven to fulfill that promise. An important chapter in our great, unfinished story is the movement for fairness and equality on behalf of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community. This month, as we recognize the immeasurable contributions of LGBT Americans, we renew our commitment to the struggle for equal rights for LGBT Americans and to ending prejudice and injustice wherever it exists.

LGBT Americans have enriched and strengthened the fabric of our national life. From business leaders and professors to athletes and first responders, LGBT individuals have achieved success and prominence in every discipline. They are our mothers and fathers, our sons and daughters, and our friends and neighbors. Across my Administration, openly LGBT employees are serving at every level. Thanks to those who came before us the brave men and women who marched, stood up to injustice, and brought change through acts of compassion or defiance we have made enormous progress and continue to strive for a more perfect union.

My Administration has advanced our journey by signing into law the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr., Hate Crimes Prevention Act, which strengthens Federal protections against crimes based on gender identity or sexual orientation. We renewed the Ryan White CARE Act, which provides life saving medical services and support to Americans living with HIV/AIDS, and finally eliminated the HIV entry ban. I also signed a Presidential Memorandum directing hospitals receiving Medicare and Medicaid funds to give LGBT patients the compassion and security they deserve in their time of need, including the ability to choose someone other than an immediate family member to visit them and make medical decisions.

In other areas, the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced a series of proposals to ensure core housing programs are open to everyone, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. HUD also announced the first ever national study of discrimination against members of the LGBT community in the rental and sale of housing. Additionally, the Department of Health and Human Services has created a National Resource Center for LGBT Elders.

Much work remains to fulfill our Nation's promise of equal justice under law for LGBT Americans. That is why we must give committed gay couples the same rights and responsibilities afforded to any married couple, and repeal the Defense of Marriage Act. We must protect the rights of LGBT families by securing their adoption rights, ending employment discrimination against LGBT Americans, and ensuring Federal employees receive equal benefits. We must create safer schools so all our children may learn in a supportive environment. I am also committed to ending "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" so patriotic LGBT Americans can serve openly in our military, and I am working with the Congress and our military leadership to accomplish that goal.

As we honor the LGBT Americans who have given so much to our Nation, let us remember that if one of us is unable to realize full equality, we all fall short of our founding principles. Our Nation draws its strength from our diversity, with each of us contributing to the greater whole. By affirming these rights and values, each American benefits from the further advancement of liberty and justice for all.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim June 2010 as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month. I call upon all Americans to observe this month by fighting prejudice and discrimination in their own lives and everywhere it exists.

Halloween Cruise

Decided to do something different for Halloween this year, taking a Halloween theme cruise going through the Western Caribbean with stops in Belize, Honduras, Grand Cayman Islands and Mexico.

An opportunity to really experience El Día de los Muertos right in Mexico, Check out Belize and spend some time with good friends.

Will let you know how things went when I return home to New York City in November.
